Dr Silvia A. Ferreira is a biomedical engineer with a background in pharmaceutical sciences (BSc 2007, MSci 2011, University of Porto, Portugal), nanomedicine (PhD 2012, University of Minho, Portugal) and regenerative medicine. She is Assistant Investigator at i3S-Institute for Research & Innovation in Health, funded by FCT Institutional Scientific Employment Stimulus (2022/28). Dr Ferreira has accomplished 6 main interdisciplinary projects efficiently, collaborated in other 7 projects, pioneered techniques (e.g., Nature Protocols), and built a reputation as an efficient collaborator and assistant supervisor (3 MSci, 5 MRes and 7 PhD students) and trained 15 PhD students. She is a Higher Education Academy Associate Fellow (2019) that recognises her pedagogical strategy and teaching/supervision experience (e.g., Guest Lecturer in Biomechanics, Biomaterials and Stem Cells 2023 in the Genes, Drugs and Stem Cells Novel Therapies MSc course, Imperial College London). She published 21 original papers (e.g., Nature Communications, Biomaterials), 1 review with 89 co-authors from 26 groups of 7 countries; 21 Q1 SJR; 14 as first author and 3 as correspondence author; total of 999 citations, Google Scholar 15.4.2024. She secured research funding (6 grants, including from industry) and was distinguished with 12 awards (e.g., Gordon Conference Award, Armours and Brasiers Travel Award). She thrived on networking as coordinator of 5 London-based Networks, presenting her work at 20 leading meetings (e.g. Gordon conferences; 8 invited talks) and organizing 6 scientific events and 10 outreach/public engagement activities. She is a Working Group Member of EU-METAHEART, CorEUStem, VascAgeNet and AERoGELS COST Actions. She received a Wellcome Trust ISSF Springboard Fellowship (2019) and a NHLI Pilot Award (2020) at Imperial College London. Her research focused on the evaluation of the influence of the matrix (hydrogel) stiffness on the mesenchymal stem/stromal cells' immunoregulatory function to improve neovascularisation. Before, she was Research Associate in Prof Sara Rankin's group, in close collaboration with Prof Julian Jones's group at Imperial College London. Her research funded by EPSRC EP/N025059/1 focused on assessing the potential of 3D printed hybrid scaffolds to drive chondrogenesis in vitro as well as evaluating the systemic and local immunogenic reactivity of these scaffolds in a mouse model (in submission). She was Research Associate in Dr Eileen Gentleman's group at King's College London (2012/18). There, her research mainly funded by Wellcome Trust focused on how the physical cues of the milieu, cellular crosstalk and specific drugs modulate stem/stromal cell behaviour within hydrogels and scaffolds (2D and 3D in vitro models) to aid the development of innovative tissue engineering strategies to promote cartilage and bone regeneration. During her PhD (2008/12), in Prof Miguel Gama and Prof Manuel Vilanova groups, funded by an International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) PhD scholarship and ESF-funded visit at University of Lund, she developed nanogels that target antigen-presenting cells to be used as vaccine delivery systems for antigens and adjuvants to prevent and treat cancer. Dr Ferreira's breadth of expertise from basic science to the translation of advanced therapies into the clinic, allows her to uniquely facilitate and bridge expertise, to attain innovative solutions (e.g., Ossimend BA biomedical device, Collagen Matrix Inc) to improve tissue regeneration and disease recovery.
