Elsa Leclerc Duarte (PhD Dipl ECVM) received her veterinary degree from the University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1996. She spent 4 years in practice and joined the academia in 2000. She further specialized in medical microbiology attending two post-graduate courses at the Institut Pasteur in Paris (Medical mycology in 2001 and tuberculosis molecular epidemiology in 2005). In 2009 she received a PhD in veterinary medicine from the University of Évora, Portugal. She has been lecturing microbiology and infectious diseases to the Master Degree in Veterinary Medicine since 2000. She was appointed Director of studies of the PhD programme in Veterinary Science of the University of Évora of and is currently the Group Leader of the Animal Bioscience Group of the research centre MED (Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development). She supervised and co-supervised over 50 master degree thesis, and 5 PhD students (2 concluded, 3 ongoing) She is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Microbiologists since 2020. Her research interests include microbiology (mycology/mycotoxicology, mycobacteriology; antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship) and infectious diseases of wildlife.

  1. EarlyMYCO project - Early-life exposure to mycotoxins: a neglected issue?. Recent studies under MYCOMIX project reported that Portuguese children until 3 years old are exposed to multiple mycotoxins through food consumption, constituting a potential health threat. Aflatoxins (carcinogenic toxins) represented the main risk contributors and deoxynivalenol (a non-carcinogenic toxin associated with immunological and gastrointestinal toxic effects) showed the highest daily in. 2019. 2. Screening of mosquitoes as vectores of F. tularensis in Portugal. Background: Francisella tularensis subsp. holartica is the etiologic agent of type B tularemia, an emergent zoonosis that occurred recently in Portugal´s neighboring country Spain, where there was an outbreak in 2007.(1) This fact has propelled the research of this pathogen in Portugal. Mosquitoes Culex spp. and Aedes spp. are considered important vectors of the pathogen in Sweden(2) but in Portug. 2012.
