Mafalda Laranjo is investigator (Junior Researcher) at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Coimbra and affiliated with the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR), and the Clinical Academic Centre of Coimbra (CACC). She obtained her Ph.D. in December 2014 at the University of Coimbra. In the last five years, she explored three main lines of research. First, photodynamic therapy, specifically aiming to broaden its applicability, improve selectivity and targeting and develop theragnostic-based solutions. A group of ring-fused chlorins stands out with an extraordinary outcome as photosensitizers (10.1021/acsomega.9b01865; 10.1039/D0MD00433B) and theragnostic properties (10.1016/j.ejmech.2020.112468). Second, she investigated other options for cancer treatment, including cold atmospheric plasma, where significant contributions were made to clarify its mechanisms of action (10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2021.05.027; 10.3390/app1109417). Third, biomaterials with applicability in dentistry were evaluated (10.3390/ma13071491; 10.3390/molecules25184297; 10.1007/s10266-019-00465-z). These outputs are associated with the participation (in the last five years) in five competitively funded research projects (one as PI) and two international research networks (Onconet Sudue, SOE1/P1/F0082; Cost Action SPRINT). Mafalda Laranjo's track record counts 89 papers, three book chapters, and one preprint. As an essential dissemination component, she contributed to several national and international meetings more than 200 published abstracts. According to the Scopus, she gathered more than 1600 citations by her peers, origination an h-index of 24. She is inventor of one national and one international patent. Mafalda Laranjo's recognition is evidenced through being invited reviewer from National Science Centre, Poland, since 2014 and external expert for the National Innovation Agency, Portugal, since 2017. Besides her research activities, she actively contributes to teaching at UC at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At FMUC, she is the coordinator of one curricular unit of the Master in Medicine. She teaches in the Master's Degree in Experimental Pathology, the Doctoral Program in Health Sciences, and the 3rd Cycle in Biomedical Engineering. Throughout her career, she supervised 4 Ph.D. students (ongoing), 18 MSc students (6 ongoing), 12 BSc students, four exchange program researchers, and several students doing laboratory rotations. She is editorial board member of Technology in Cancer Research & Treatment (ISSN: 1533-0338), Materials (ISSN 1996-1944), and BMC Oral Health (ISSN: 1472-6831). She also collaborates with several international journals editorial through peer reviewing (including Cancer Biol & Med, World J Gastroenterol, Evid Based Complementary Altern Med). Mafalda Laranjo's frequently engages in outreach activities, namely the European Researchers Night and other activities targeted at the general society. She also participates in University Management activities; she was elected for two consecutive terms as Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) postdoctoral representative.
