Catarina Amélia Pereira Miguel de Sousa Cabral (Catarina Miguel) graduated in Chemical Engineering (5 years graduation) from the Universidade de Lisboa- Instituto Superior Técnico (2004) and holds a PhD in Conservation Sciences from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa- Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (2012, Summa cum laude). She is a Contracted Researcher at Laboratório HERCULES-Universidade de Évora, a member of the CityUMacau Chair in Sustainable Heritage-Universidade de Évora, a member of the In2Past Associated Laboratory and an Invited Assistant Professor in the Universidade de Évora. She published 32 papers in journals indexed in Scopus, 19 sections of books, and four co-authored books. Organised one International Conference, Co-organized five international conferences and one exhibition on illuminated manuscripts at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Supervised 9 MSc dissertations and one PhD dissertation and is currently supervising three PhD dissertations. Catarina Miguel held a post-doctoral Fellowship in a European Research Project at HERCULES Lab, where she was responsible for setting up the Vibrational Spectroscopy Lab of HERCULES Lab. She was a Researcher in 16 projects and a Scientific Initiation Fellow in 3 projects. She works in Heritage Sciences, emphasising Analytical Chemistry - spectroscopic analysis. For the last 18 years, Catarina Miguel has worked on studying the materials used to produce illuminated manuscripts, having integrated as a researcher the first Portuguese research projects devoted to studying Portuguese medieval illuminations (2006-2012). In 2014, Catarina Miguel coordinated the research project SCISTER (SCIentific Study of Cistercian Illuminated Scripts, Techniques, Esthetics and Religion), under which coordinated the first (and so far unique) Portuguese international mission to the Vatican Library to study 11th-13th century illuminated Cistercian manuscripts and to Troyes (France) to coordinate the first (and so far unique) study on the characterisation of the materials used to produce medieval illuminated manuscripts from Clairvaux Abbey-France. In Portugal, she coordinated several interdisciplinary studies on the study of illuminated manuscripts from the medieval to the Renaissance period. Currently, she is the PI of the ROADMAP project (PTDC/ART-HIS/0985/2021), which will study the artworks by António de Holanda or be attributed to him in a chronological perspective produced between 1515 and 1554. This will be the first systematic chronological characterisation of the artwork of an illuminator from the Renaissance period, both from an art history perspective and from his material and painting technique(s) characterisation, unbreaking borders of countries and institutions. In her curriculum, Ciência Vitae, the most frequent terms in the context of scientific, technological and artistic-cultural output are analytical techniques, chemometric analysis, Comparative history, Abbey of Alcobaça, Liturgical Manuscripts, Illumination, and Bookbinding.

2023/09/21 - 2023/09/22 DRUGS&COLORS 2023 is an International Conference dedicated to studying ancient medicines, pigments, and dyes – as, in ancient times, their preparation and commercialisation were found together in the apothecaries, pharmacies, and spezierias. DRUGS&COLORS 2023 focuses on historically accurate reproductions of old recipes to produce ancient medicines, pigments and dyes, on the material characterisation of these materials and their applications over time.
