Fernando Lezama (PhD, 2014) is an Integrated Researcher in GECAD - Research Group on Intelligent Engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development, Polytechnic of Porto (IPP). He received the Ph.D. in ICTs from the Tecnologico de Monterrey (ITESM) in 2014. Dr. Lezama's areas of research include the application of computational intelligence (CI), such as natural computing or machine learning, to address optimization challenges in power and energy systems. His solid background in mathematical programming and evolutionary algorithms complements his research interests, which span energy resource management, electricity markets, energy sharing, and demand response. Dr. Lezama's work advances the understanding of complex energy systems, and it has been instrumental in numerous articles and projects, driving innovation in the field. Since 2017, he coordinates the GECAD team of interdisciplinary energy systems optimization, which has 1 doctorate senior researcher, 2 PhD students and 1 MSc student, along with collaboration with senior members of GECAD, visiting researchers, and students. The team specializes in developing models and solutions for complex optimization within energy systems, including transactive energy systems, local energy markets, and energy resource management, all of which contribute to various GECAD projects. Dr. Lezama participated in more than 7 international and 7 national projects and has past/current experience in R&D projects coordination: Principal Investigator at the industry HRI - R&D consultancy project funded by Honda Research Institute Europe GmbH; GECAD/ISEP coordinator of European F4iTECH (C2021/1-10) funded by CELTIC-NEXT; and GECAD/ISEP coordinator of Portuguese project NGS-BP12. He was the international coordinator of task 5.1 on business models, and WP3 Local market enabled DR, from H2020 DOMINOES (771076) project, as well as WP2 of F4iTECH. A leader in academia, he has organized over 18 events, including competitions, special sessions, and workshops in CI for power and energy systems, supported by top-level organizations such as IEEE CIS and IEEE PES. He is a key organizer of the Evolutionary Computation in the Energy Domain competition series at major conferences (PES-GM, CEC, GECCO) since 2017. These events foster interdisciplinary collaboration and serve as educational platforms, promoting open science by facilitating the sharing of methodologies and software tools. With 23 oral presentations at conferences and other events, Dr. Lezama actively contributes to knowledge dissemination. He is Associate Editor of Artificial Intelligence Review of Springer and has been guest editor of 5 special issues. He also has +100 reviews in JCR-indexed journals fully recognized by WOS. In addition, Dr. Lezama is regularly a program committee member of scientific conferences such as WCCI, CEC, MALECON, EI.A, COMIA, or ECTA. Dr. Lezama is the author of +100 scientific articles, 40 of them in indexed journals. He contributed to 15 book sections and published over 50 articles at conferences in power energy systems and computer sciences. As of 04/03/24, Dr. Lezama has +1810 citations on Google Scholar and a h-index of 20. He has successfully supervised 4 MSc dissertations and co-supervised 10 (with 3 ongoing), in addition to supervising/co-supervising 5 BSc projects. Moreover, he supervised one international visiting PhD student from UNESP Brazil. Since 2021, Dr. Lezama participated in teaching activities as auxiliary Professor of the course Electric Mobility of the Power and Energy Systems MSc program at ISEP (Portugal). Starting in 2023, he is also Visiting Professor at UNESP, Brazil, giving lectures on applying metaheuristics in complex energy systems. Finally, Fernando Lezama’s achievements have been recognized with awards and memberships, such as the co-chair of IEEE ISATC Task Force on CI for the Energy Domain, IEEE Senior Member, and SNI-1 by the national research system of Mexico.
