Luisa Durães is Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering of University of Coimbra and full member of the Centre on Chemical Engineering and Environmental Resources for Sustainability (CERES). She concluded her PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2008, specializing in the energetic materials area and, after that, in the synthesis of nanostructured materials (aerogels, core-shell and/or porous nanoparticles, films), by sol-gel technology and other soft solution approaches for multiple applications. After participating in 7 international projects in the area of energetic materials during her PhD, she contributed actively to the development of 26 funded projects in the area of nanotechnology (6 international). Most of them (18) aim(ed) the development of surface-modified and reinforced silica nanostructured materials (aerogels, mainly) for insulation, environmental remediation or biomedical purposes. She was/is PI and/or responsible by UC contribution of 11 of these projects (5 international). She has successfully supervised 6 PhD finished works (+5 ongoing), 70 MSc theses, 13 IAESTE/mobility trainees and +20 project researchers. She published ca.115 peer reviewed papers/book chapters and ca.150 papers/abstracts in conference proceedings. Her h-index is 32 (WoS). She is co-inventor of 5 international patents (2015, 2022; all published). She received the prize "247 Anos FCTUC" (2019) for the international impact of the publications in 2018, and one of her papers (DOI: 10.1016/j.jnoncrysol.2013.10.017) was distinguished by Elsevier with the prize "The 2018 Most Downloaded Article Award". One of her MSc supervised thesis was awarded with the "Prémio Cátedra Fertiberia de Estudios Agroambientales". She also won the NextLap Accelerator - 2022 with the idea "Recycled Rubber-Silica Aerogel for Thermal Insulation of Buildings". She belongs to the "World Top 2% Scientists" ranking of University of Stanford, since 2022. As an expert, she evaluated 24 international projects by invitation from National Foundations/Agencies in Europe and reviewed over 160 scientific manuscripts for ca. 50 high quality journals. She is Editor of Molecules (MDPI, IF 4.6) and is/was Guest-Editor of 6 Special Issues focusing in the application of aerogels in environmental protection (Journals: Polymers, Gels and Molecules). She was also member of 14 PhD and ca. 90 MSc juris (many of them as chair). Moreover, she is member of the Technical Commission CT194-Nanotechnologies of the Portuguese Institute of Quality, linked to ISO and CEN standardization bureaus. She organized 12 scientific seminars/meetings/webinars and is a regular contributor to Science dissemination open activities to the society (Researchers Night, Science week, Open days, Summer University, among others). She was Coordinator of the Integrated Master in Chemical Engineering of University of Coimbra (2019-2021) and nominated twice as Vice-Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering of University of Coimbra for the academic area (2015-2019). She was the Head of this department between 2021 and 2023. Currently she is Coordinator of the Master in Chemical Engineering of University of Coimbra.
