Abraham Ignacio Fernández Pichel holds a B.A in Egyptology from the Université Lyon 2 and is Doktor der Philosophie (Dr. Phil) by the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen. After the completion of his PhD, he became a contracted researcher at the Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 and the Centre franco-égyptien d’étude des temples de Karnak (CFEETK) in Luxor (Egypt). He is currently holding a Junior Research FCT-contract at the Centro de História of the Universidade de Lisboa. His main research areas involve the philological and theological study of religious texts of the Late Period in Pharaonic Egypt, a topic addressed by most of his publications in Spanish, French, German, and English. In total he has published 2 books as sole author, 5 edited books, and more than 20 articles, most of them in peer-reviewed prestigious Egyptological journals, such as BIFAO, ZÄS, SAK and Études et travaux. In recent years, he has also diversified his scientific production with several publications focusing on the reception of ancient Egypt in contemporary popular culture. In the latter field, Abraham I. Fernández coordinates since 2023 an international project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (Portugal): “Ich mache mir die (ägyptische) Welt, wie sie mir gefällt” (abbreviated to Egypopcult). He is currently participating as Researcher in different projects focused on the inscriptions of late Egyptian temples, mainly at Karnak and Esna, in which he has the cooperation of prestigious institutions such as the IFAO, the CFEETK, and the Université de Montpellier. Previously, during his postdoctoral work between 2017 and 2019, he contributed to the editing and development of the Karnak Project database, which contains more than 9000 inscriptions of the Karnak temples, accessible online at http://sith.huma-num.fr/karnak. In the field of digital humanities, he has also participated as a contributor to the Shemanefer database on the inscriptions of the temple of Esna (https://bookdown.org/shemanefer/Esna2/), as well as his involvement as coordinator and translator in “Mundos antiguos digitales”, an initiative which includes the editing of a journal and a digital encyclopedia covering topics related to the History of Antiquity in general. The relevance of his research can also be attested to by presentation and/or invitations to participate in international conferences and meetings (Lisbon, Prague, Madrid, Zaragoza, Birmingham, Toronto, Luxor, Tübingen, Buenos Aires, Montreal, Cairo, Birmingham, etc.). He has also been granted several international scholarships, like a German DAAD fellowship and IFAO doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships. Another highlight of his activity has to do with academic teaching. He is a former secondary school teacher with a master's degree Pedagogy in History. He initially taught Egyptology at the University of Seville for 8 years. He has continued and diversified his teaching experience in the last five years with his accreditation as “maître de conferences” at French Universities and his activities as faculty member at the University of Lisbon. He has written articles on Ancient Egyptian pedagogy and conducted several workshops in secondary schools on bringing Egyptology to pre-university levels of education. He has also supervised Master's theses and participated in doctoral students' tribunals in different European universities. Finally, his distinctly international profile has to be highlighted, which includes long-term training stays in Seville (5 years), Lyon (6 years), and Tübingen (5 years), as well as other scientific stays in New York, Esna, Cairo, Berlin, Paris, and his current work in Lisbon since 2020. He also fluently speaks and writes four modern languages, an imperative skill in the discipline of Egyptology.
