Joana Beatriz Sousa (December, 1979, Portugal) completed the PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences -Specialty of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy (2014) by the University of Porto-Faculty of Pharmacy, MSc in Quality Control (2009) by the University of Porto-Faculty of Pharmacy and the degree in Biochemistry (2005) by the University of Coimbra-Faculty of Sciences and Technology. Joana Beatriz Sousa is currently a Guest Assistant Professor at the Department of Drug Sciences of the University of Porto (Portugal) and integrated researcher at REQUIMTE - LAQV, Porto. She has collaborated several national and international research projects and, until now, supervised a master's degree, in the pharmacology field. She has authored 26 scientific papers, 7 book chapters (H-index=11, ca. 275 citations) and has co-organized 2 scientific international events. She has been involved as a researcher in 6 projects. Joana Beatriz Sousa has a FELASA C certificate and accreditation by Direção Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária (DGAV, Portugal) to work with laboratory animals, including animal models of diseases. Her present research interests are medical biotechnology research with cell, tissue and organ-based assays and has focused on Drugs, Food and Health: Impact of Drugs and Foods on proteins/enzymes and receptors and their benefit in Physiology and Pathophysiology, namely in Hypertension and Fetal Programming, Endothelial Dysfunction, Inflammation, Oxidative Stress and Cancer. She has dedicated her work studying cell signalling pathways in animal tissues and in cell culture models (primary and immortalized): image analysis with immunohistochemistry (Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy and alphascreen methodology) associated with qPCR and Western-blot. At the present she is co-supervisor of a PhD student developing assays with BSG and BSY brewing by-products which have given several stimulating results.
