Mr. Filipe Neves Santos Senior robotics researcher at CRIIS Unit in INESC TEC, graduated in Electrical Engineering at the school of engineering of polytechnic of Porto, Portugal, in 2003. He obtained his Master's degree in Automation and Robotics from the Instituto Superior Técnico (University of Lisbon) in 2007 and a PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering obtained from Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) in 2014. Co-founder and COO between 2007 and 2010, of OMNITA – Sistemas Autónomos para Monitorização, S.A (Autonomous systems for monitoring) a start-up company incorporated in 2007. OMNITA was a subsidiary company to 45% by Venture capital (InovCapital) and 30% for capital Business Angels (Invicta Angels). He is a formal robotics researcher since 2003, with a large experience on navigation systems for unnamed aerial and ground vehicles. Actually his priority research fields are: robotics for agriculture and forestry; human-robot interaction; and, Semantic SLAM. Filipe Neves dos Santos carries out research and development activities for more than twelve years in the field of air and land mobile robotics. Over the past five years, he has finished its PhD thesis work (2014) in the field of localization and semantic mapping, highly relevant to allow the use of robots in new contexts, such as: industry 4.0, service robotics and agriculture. This research work was carried out in three fundamental robotic abilities: mapping and localization, spatial semantic segmentation, and visual perception. The proposed approach for the visual perception allowed him to promote and supervise more than 4 R&D works relevant for driver drowsiness detection systems (a novel approach was proposed to detect in real time ocular regions and level of attention of drivers). In 2014, he starts a new R&D line inside of INESC TEC, denominated of Robotics for Agriculture and Forestry (agrob.inesctec.pt). From the Portuguese agricultural end-users needs and desires, European strategic agenda for robotics, and considering the new trends on precision agriculture, he designs a R&D roadmap with focus on the development of small, intelligent, autonomous and modular agricultural machinery for application on three relevant scenarios for Portugal economy: Steep Slope Agriculture (Vineyards), Forestry (biomass), and greenhouses (urban). This roadmap promotes the researching and developing of key robotic enabling technologies, which are drive by four milestones: autonomous operations of monitoring, precision spraying, pruning and selective harvesting in steep slope vineyards. From this roadmap, he has promoted the development of new projects in co-promotion with relevant end-users and industry, which has resulted in more than 18 projects in highly competitive calls (H2020,P2020, Era-net, POCTEP, FCT), from these 8 are ongoing. Besides, he has designed and developed 3 robotic platforms for the development, researching and bench-marking of key enabling robotics technology in real environments. The first agricultural robotic platform (AgrobV14) was developed for the Field Robot Event 2014 (FRE2014) event and got financial support from CLAAS. AgrobV14 allowed to gather real data in one steep slope vineyard and make R&D in localization systems reliable under GPS/GNSS absence/fail/attacks. After, four more robust and reliable platforms (for forest and agriculture) were built AgrobV15, AgrobV16, AgrobV17, AgrobV18 , which allowed to move forward the roadmap and research visual semantic perception systems and advanced path planning solutions. He was the (co)author of more than 40 scientific publications (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8486-6113), including papers published in journals listed in JCR - ISI and/or SCOPUS, in indexed conference proceedings.
