Carla Queirós obtained her BSc. (2005) & MSc. (2008) in Chemistry at the Univ. of Porto (UP) and completed her PhD. in Sustainable Chemistry in 2018 (joint programme between UP, Nova Univ. of Lisbon and Univ. of Aveiro). She is co-author of 28 articles (12 as 1st author and 13 in the last 5 years), 2 book chapters and 2 national scientific periodicals (h-index= 12; 88 co-authors (39% international); 314 citations (excl. self-citations, Scopus, 20230502)). From 2017-2018 she worked as a fellowship researcher at LAQV-FCUP in the MOFsENS project (M-ERA-NET/0005/2014) and from 2019-2021 she was a Contracted Researcher for X-Sensors project (PTDC/QUI-QOR/29426/2017). In 2022 she was granted as PI a BRF (Portugal-UK Bilateral Research Fund) grant by PARSUK (Portuguese Association of Researchers and Students in the UK) in which she collaborated and did an internship at John Moores University in Liverpool (UK) with Dr. Francesca Giuntini. She was co-Principal Investigator (PI) of the project Plas2Nano (Plastics for nanomaterials: from waste bottles to MOF-based nanomaterials using sustainable approaches, EXPL/QUI-OUT/1554/2021). She completed a Post-Graduation in Management of Development Cooperation Projects at the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP-Porto). Her expertise relates with: i) design, synthesis and characterization of new colorimetric/fluorescent compounds and coordination polymers, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs); ii) study their applications as sensors towards metal ions, amines and gases, and heterogeneous catalysts; iii) preparation of solid matrices, including thin-films and silica nanoparticles. In the last year she started a new collaboration in the agricultural sciences field, involving the determination/quantification of N, P and K in fertilizers/plant samples and data augmentation strategies for reagent-less spectroscopy with INESC TEC (Dr. Rui Martins work team). She is a member of SPQ (Sociedade Portuguesa de Química/Portuguese Chemistry Society) and of Sensors 100 Network. She actively contributed to several scientific networks and national/international projects, including: COST Action (CM1302, Eur. Network on Smart Inorg. Polymers), FCT-DAAD project (Novel ligand-porphyrin conjugates for targeted PDT of cancer), FloWater ¿ fluorescent chelators for metal ion detection in water (PTDC/QUI-QIN/28142/2017). She as developed scientific work during internships in Germany and Spain (Dr. David Scheschkewitz at Saarland Univ., Germany; Dr. Evamarie Hey-Hawkins at Leipzig Univ., Germany; and Dr. Juan Gonzalez at IMDEA, Madrid, Spain). And established other networks with U. Aveiro, U. Évora, INESC TEC (UP), Univ. of Palermo (Italy), Louisiana State Univ. (USA) and Univ. of Burgos (Spain). The work and expertise areas that arose from the PhD and following years allowed the work group to attain financial support within grant applications and promoted the interest of several students in the ongoing projects reflected in a higher number of supervisions within the work group. She was a supervisor & co-supervisor of 3 BSc students, has mentored 5 Chem. MSc students and 2 Sustainable Chemistry PhD students; among several undergraduate students. Currently working as a contracted researcher for the STARGATE project at the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF, Portuguese Catholic University, Porto).

2022/11/07 - 2022/11/30 Internship at Liverpool John Moores University (Liverpool, UK) associated to BRF 2022 grant (PI; co-PI Dr. Francesca Giuntini). During the internship new materials based on terephthalic acid (obtained from the PET hydrolysis) and MOF nanomaterials were characterized and incorporated in diverse solid supports for O2 sensing studies, using solid state fluorescence spectroscopy. 2019/04/01 - 2019/04/12 Internship at IMDEA (Madrid, Spain) associated to MOFsENS Project, under the supervision of Dr. Juan Cabanillas Gonzalez. During the internship several techniques of thin films preparation were learned and applied. The photoluminescence properties of prepared films were studied and evaluated. From this work a manuscript has been submitted (2022), the internship allowed a closer interaction with Dr. Juan Gonzalez work group and several communications and manuscripts resulted from this collaboration. 2017/11/12 - 2017/11/25 Inserted in a Cooperation FCT / DAAD an internship at Leipzig University under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Evamarie Hey-Hawkins was done. The main objective was the synthesis of novel ligand-porphyrin conjugates for targeted photodynamic therapy of cancer. During the stay several synthetic protocols were employed and the synthetized compounds characterized by NMR; the work continued back at FCUP (Portugal).
