Ana Aguiar-Ricardo, Full Professor at Department of Chemistry at NOVA School of Science and Technology, graduated in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST, 1987), PhD from Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCT NOVA, 1994) under the supervision of Prof. M. Nunes da Ponte. She joined the University of Nottingham, UK (1995) as a post-doctoral researcher in the laboratory of Prof. Sir M. Poliakoff. She subsequently held a visiting position at Hammond's Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA, July-December 2007). In 2011, she was awarded an Habilitation in Sustainable Chemistry. Her research fields cover green chemistry and supercritical fluid technology targeting (bio)polymer synthesis and processing, particle engineering and functionalization design. Her primary research focuses on the development of greener chemical processing platforms for non-invasive drug delivery via dermal and pulmonary routes, and (bio)separation processes. The interest in pharmaceutical technology directed her research to further develop advanced composite and hybrid dry powder formulations (nano-in-micro particles) for inhalation, which fostered collaborations with the industry. She participated in more than 20 projects and acted as Principal Investigator of 6 funded projects (ca 1.2 M€). Within her research area, she published over 109 articles in scientific journals and 4 Book Chapters (H30), and was awarded 3 national patents. In addition, she co-supervised 4 post-doctoral fellows, 15 PhD theses (two were recipients of International Society for Advancement of Supercritical Fluids (ISASF)-Best Thesis Award), and over 30 Master Theses. Her scientific work was awarded with the Hovione Prize - Solvay & Hovione Innovation Challenge (SHIC) in 2008 and 2011, and in 2019 she was distinguished as one of 100 Women of Science by Ciência Viva (MCTES), Portugal. In parallel with her scientific activity, she has developed an intensive teaching activity in Physical Chemistry, Alternative solvents, Clean Technologies and Green Chemistry, Drug Delivery Syastems courses in both undergraduate and graduate levels. She has pioneered, together with colleagues from Department of Physics and Department of Life Sciences, the creation of an interdepartmental Master in Biomaterials and Nanomedicine where she is teaching the course on Drug Delivery Systems. She has held numerous positions at FCT NOVA, namely serving as Director of Department of Chemistry at FCT-NOVA (2017-2019), member of the Advisory Board of FCT NOVA (2021-2023), member of the Scientific Council (2020-2021), a NOVA Faculty member of Bio-Engineering Systems in the MIT-Portugal Program (2007-2016). Currently, she is the head of Chemistry Department, coordinates the Doctoral Program in Sustainable Chemistry, is member of the scientific board of LAQV-REQUIMTE and, since 2019, coordinates the Materials for Sustainability and Wellbeing Group (MatSusWell) at LAQV REQUIMTE. In 2019, she became President of the EuChemS Division of Green and Sustainable Chemistry, member of IUPAC Polymers Division and of Interdivisional Committee on Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development (ICGCSD).
