Enrique Borges holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry (1986) and an M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry (1989) from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). In 1995, he completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry, specializing in Organic Chemistry at USC, with a thesis centered on the enantioselective preparation of chiral aza-bicyclic scaffolds for potential applications in drug design and medicinal chemistry. He further complemented his training in 2000 with a Postgraduate course in Pedagogical Aptitude at USC. Currently, Enrique Borges is an Assistant Professor with Aggregation at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) and an Integrated Researcher at LAQV-REQUIMTE. His research expertise lies in the asymmetric organic synthesis of bioactive compounds, particularly antineoplastic, antiviral, and neuroprotective agents. He has played a pivotal role as Project Leader at LAQV-REQUIMTE, directing an FCT-funded project on the synthesis and biological evaluation of sila-secosteriods. Borges has made significant contributions to science and society, with 143 research articles published in high-impact journals, 23 of which were published in the last five years. Additionally, he has registered 10 patents, including three in the past five years. His work has been recognized with multiple awards, including two IACOBUS Papers Awards (2024 and 2025) and an IACOBUS Patents Award (2022). He has actively participated in scientific events, delivering over 150 communications. His scientific contributions include the discovery of an unprecedented transprotection mechanism for N–C hydrogenolysis, the first-time isolation and characterization of a stable carbamic-carbonic anhydride in the solid state, and the development of novel methodologies for peptide oxidation and oligopeptide assembly. In medicinal chemistry, his research has led to the biological characterization of Glypromate-based neuroprotective derivatives and the development of bioactive heterocycles with therapeutic potential. He has also contributed to the design and synthesis of Vitamin D derivatives with antineoplastic activity, co-inventing a PCT patent on this work. As a research leader, Borges has directed efforts toward the medicinal chemistry of potential antineoplastic and neuroprotective compounds. His leadership and participation in 11 projects (> 1,555,000.00 euros), including those funded by FCT, demonstrates his expertise in both scientific and financial management. Borges has built extensive collaborations with national and international research groups, fostering knowledge exchange in pharmacological and toxicological evaluations of neuropeptides and bioactive compounds. His partnerships include work with researchers from USC, the University of Porto, the University of Navarra, the University of Aveiro, and the Basque Country. Beyond his research, Borges is dedicated to training and mentoring the next generation of scientists. He has supervised or co-supervised eight Ph.D. students, 27 M.Sc. students, and 48 undergraduate students. He has also participated as a jury member in 15 Ph.D. defenses and 35 M.Sc. theses. His commitment to education extends to the development of advanced courses, including the "Synthesis of Drugs" course at FCUP, where he has contributed to shaping curricula in organic and medicinal chemistry. His contributions extend to the broader research community through the organization of international scientific meetings and congresses, such as the XV Iberian Peptide Meeting and the XXVI Meeting of the Portuguese Society of Chemistry. Borges has also provided technical consultancy services for industrial research projects, including collaborations with TMG Automotive. He has worked closely with the University of Porto’s Innovation Department (UPIN) to promote the dissemination and commercialization of patented technologies developed under FCT-funded projects.
