Salete Balula graduated in Technological Chemistry at Univ of Lisbon in 1997 and completed the PhD degree in the area of Inorganic Chemistry at Univ. of Aveiro in 2004. To complete her PhD, Salete worked for approximately two years in international research groups: Prof Hill in Emory Univ, USA, and Prof Schlindwein in De Montfort Univ, UK, learning innovative methodologies to prepare oxometallic compounds and also performing EXAFS analysis. After completing the PhD studies, Salete started the postdoctoral work in Material Science and Inorganic and organometallic chemistry. Salete shared this postdoctoral period working in the Green Chemistry Centre of the Univ. of York, UK, and in CICECO Laboratory, Univ. of Aveiro. During this time, Salete developed her expertise in oxometallic Materials Preparation and Sustainable Catalysis. From her postdoctoral work resulted 19 publications in high international impact journals. Balula started her independent research career in 2009, as Assistant Investigator and since 2015 as Principal Investigator in LAQV-REQUIMTE, FCUP, Univ. of Porto. Salete was congratulated in 2014 and again in 2019 with a contract to principal Investigator in the competitive Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus from FCT. She created a new line of research, working in Sustainable oxidative heterogeneous catalysis based on active polyoxometalates and green solvents. Balula published a total of 124 papers in international peer review journals (88 during her independent career, h-index = 36, 3766 total citations) and 72 of these she is the senior author. These are publications in high impact factor journals (80 papers as Q1). During the last five years, Balula was mainly dedicated to design strategic functional materials capable to catalyze reactions with high efficiency, cost-effectivity and under environmentally friendly conditions, based mainly in novel inorganic and organometallic compounds. This work has been strongly stimulated by the straight collaboration with the Galp Industry, originating 51 publications in international scientific journals, 42 oral communications, 2 Master thesis and 2 PhD thesis finalized and other 4 new PhD students started since 2020, all supervised by Balula. From 2017 to 2023, Balula was involved in 2 financed projects as member (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016422 and PTDC/QUI-QIN/28142/2017), contributing mainly with the design of functional porous composites; furthermore, she was the principal investigator of PTDC/CTM-CTM/31983/2017 project in the area of heterogeneous catalysts for valorization of glycerol. The key for most of the scientific performance of Balula in Chemical Science was supported by her active national (F. Pereira, from FEUP, I Gonçalves, F. Paz from CICECO; P. Almeida, M Corvo from CENIMAT, L. Martins, E. Alegria from IST, J Pires from FCUL, S. Gago, L. Branco, L. Neves, J. Crespo from LAQVREQUIMTE-NOVA) and international (P. Spyros from Univ. Patras, Greece; C. Piscopo from Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Germany; J. Zhao from Northwest Univ. Xi'an, China; M. Shahrak from Quchan Univ Technol, Iran) academic collaborations, associated to the straight collaboration with the refinery Industry (J. Ribeiro, R. Valença, Galp).
