Carla Portugal is graduated in Chemical Engineering since 1999 and completed a PhD degree on Chemical Engineering, in the specialization area of Transfer phenomena and Unit operations - membrane processes in 2005, both from FCT-UNL. Carla Portugal has authored 54 papers published in international scientific peer reviewed journals (listed in the ISI Web of Science), with more than 50% of them belonging to Q1(1st quartile), (co)authored of 2 book chapters and 4 encyclopedia entries. She has co-authored 16 invited lectures, 60 regular oral communications and 40 panel communications at International conferences and Workshops of relevance her scientific area of activity. Carla Portugal is currently Assistant Researcher at LAQV-Requimte, NOVA FCT. She has experience in the development, implementation and monitoring of membrane based processes. Particularly, she has experience in protein fractionation and purification through membrane processes (bioseparations) and in 1D and 2D fluorescence spectroscopy for monitoring membrane and biologic processes performance, monitoring and control of solute-surface interactions. Since 2009, her research work has been focused on the development of functional porous media/membranes for bio-applications: i. tissue engineering, ii. biomedical devices, iii. drug delivery systems, iv. affinity-based chromatography, v. sensors, vi. membrane bioseparations and iv. membrane-assisted protein crystallography. Carla Portugal participated in 12 projects financed by international and national funding agencies. She is/was responsible for the scientific coordination of 2 projects - FCT-MCTES and assumed the coordination of the scientific component of a ERA-NET project (FCT-MEC, Portugal) and participates(ed) as team member in 5 projects, 2 EU projects and in 3 projects as an external member/consultant. Carla Portugal has significant experience in the supervision of young researchers. She has supervised the experimental work developed by 5 PhD, 9 MSc students (2 MSc works are ongoing), collaborated in the supervison of the studies developed by 18 PhD students, supervised 6 final graduation projects and supervised the research work developed by 16 other young researchers. She lectured classes of Transference Phenomena to Students of Chemical Engineering and Biology, Drug Delivery Systems to students of the Master course of Biomaterials and NanoMedicine, Chemical Processes and Technologies and Membrane Separation Processes (laboratory classes) to students from integrated Master courses-FCT-UNL and General Chemistry (laboratory classes) to students from Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physical Engineering at FCT-UNL. From 2012-2020, she lectured classes on Separation Processes, coordinates and lectures classes on the module on Membranes in Regenerative Medicine to the ERAMUS MUNDUS master course on membrane engineering, EM3E and EM3E-4SW, at FCT-UNL. From 2017-2021, Carla Portugal was a member of the Council of the European Membrane Society (EMS), aiming to stimulate the education and advanced formation in Membrane Engineering. She collaborated in the management of the network of excellence: Nano-Based Membrane Technologies NanoMemPro, which aimed the development and increment the implementation of membrane technologies at an industrial level. Carla Portugal was assessor of examination and assessment of applications for the Erasmus Mundus Master (EM3E, EM3E-4SW and MESD) and doctoral (EUDIME) programs in Membrane Engineering (from European Commission) aiming to provide an advanced education in areas of membrane science and engineering at the interface between material science and chemical engineering to non-European and European students.
