My expertise is in the area of asymmetric catalysis, organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry and polymer synthesis. I have over 30 years of experince having carried out two postdoc terms in two leading laboratories prior to obtaining my current independente position. I have a strong interest in health, energy and food related research. I have an h-index of 27 (>3335 citations on google Scholar and >2744 Scopus) . I am currently an associate professor of pharmaceutical chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy University of Coimbra, with aggregation in organic chemistry since 2012 . I was a former vice-presidente of the Organic Chemistry Division of the Portuguese Chemical Society (SPQ), the chair of ISySyCat2015-2025. I have served on a number of grant evaluation boards (FCT Portugal, Poland, Cyprus, France), including for the european commison (Pathfinder, EraNet etc). I have been coordenador of the organic and organometallic synthesis section of the Evora Chemistry Centre, since its inception in 2002 and which now is part of LAQV-REQUIMTE. I have supervised serveral PhD and post-doc coworkers. I have over 170 presentations that includes, publications (papers, book chapters, the book - Catalytic Arylation Methods, that was published in Jan 2015, with another Wiley-VCH book entitled Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients in Synthesis, Catalytic Processes in Research and Development (which is available in bookshops), patents (several international) and talks). I was co-editor for the thematic issues of ChemCatChem, Molecules, Synlett and Synthesis (to mark ISySyCat2019/2021 ). I set up the spin-out company Chiratecnics (www.chiratecnics.com) in 2009. I am currently an editor with Open Chemistry and Chemistry Frontiers (Medicinal and Pharmaceutical chemistry) , was a participant in the COST Action network (CA15135), MuTaLig -Multi-target paradigm for innovative ligand identification in the drug discovery process, and both a prestigious Chemistry Europe Fellow and Royal Society of Chemistry Fellow. Have been the coordinator of public funds/grants to the value of over Euro 2 million to date. In February 2020 I was nominated a Fellow of ChemPubSoc Europe. I have given talks at many conferences and institutions, the most recent have included the Nordic-Irish Process Chemistry Forum 2023, in Belfast (June 2023) and Highligting Organic Chemistry in Portugal, EuChemS, Online talk, 23 Sep. 2023. I have trained over 70 students (from post-docs to undergraduate students). Some have been contracted by public and private universities, others by prestigous industrial groups (Merck-Milipore, EvoTec, SpiroChem, iplantprotect, Capgemini Engineering, CrioEstaminal, Crysforma (Spain), Ascenza Agro, CENTI, etc), and others as Professors (University of Evora, Central Luzon State University, Jining Medical University, Rizhao, China, and University of Egas Moniz) and indepedent researchers (University of Evora, IST-UL, University of Aveiro).

  4. Arylid-OX and Arylid-BOX derived catalysts: applications in catalytic asymmetric cyclopropanation. A novel family of chiral non-racemic monodentate oxazoline ligands known as Arylid-OXs 1a and 1b was prepared in good overall yields. These ligands were screened in bench-mark Cu(I)-catalyzed cyclopropanations and gave ees as high as 58%.
