Mohammad Tariq obtained a PhD (2007) degree in Chemistry from Jamia Millia University, New Delhi. Afterwards, he was selected to work as an FCT Postdoctoral Fellow at Instituto de Tecnologia Quimica e Biologica (ITQB), Oeiras where he spent 6 years studying the thermophysical behaviour of ionic liquids (ILs) and IL-containing systems. Apart from this, he started to collaborate with the Surface Science group at Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), Lisbon to study the behaviour of ILs at air/liquid and solid/liquid interfaces. With a strong experience in the physical chemistry of ILs, he obtained a research position at Qatar University (QU) in 2013 to work on a Qatar Foundation-funded project in collaboration with the Queen¿s University, Belfast on the control and management of gas hydrates (GHs) using ILs. Later in December 2016, he came back to Portugal at LAQV/REQUIMTE, FCT-NOVA where he is working as a Researcher combining two disciplines of ILs and GHs aiming towards their applications in Energy and Environment related processes. It must be stressed that the candidate demonstrated excellent independence. To date, he has published 58 articles including 4 reviews and 2 book chapters with 132 co-authors indicating his extended research network. His work gained >3300 citations with an h-index of 27 as per google scholar. Among them, 2 reviews (CSR, JCED) and four articles were highly cited from Web of Knowledge/Scopus. He co-authored several articles in high-impact journals: Chem Soc. Rev., ACS App. Mat. Interface., Nanoscale etc. Apart from this, he delivered 9 invited lectures, 14 oral and 47 poster presentations at international conferences that clearly demonstrate his scientific recognition in the area of expertise as well as the quality of the work done so far. From 2009 onwards all papers (44) were published independently from PhD supervisors in diverse areas. Among the total published articles, he appeared as a co-corresponding author in 10 and the first author in 18 of them. 5 articles as corresponding authors are already in the final stage of publication in 2023. During his scientific career in Portugal and Qatar, he was a team member in 13 projects with total financing of >2 Million Euros. He has also obtained fellowships from Qatar Foundation, FCT/MCTES - Portugal and CSIR - India. He obtained competitive funding in 2019 from FCT/MCTES as a PI on GHs related project through which he formed a small group by hiring a postdoc researcher and a master's student. One of the students also obtained PhD grant in 2022 from FCT/MCTES. Other national/international students (Erasmus Master's student from Sorbonne University and a PhD student from IFERMER) are obtaining training in the area of GHs and ILs. In the framework of the FCT/MCTES project, he successfully organized an international webinar on GHs in February 2023 where researchers from 15 countries participated. Tariq established some strong collaborations in and outside Portugal with different research groups, namely: i) Surface Science group, IST-UL, Lisbon, ii) Electroactive Smart Materials group, Univ. Minho, iii) Marine Geoscience group IFREMER, Bretagne, France, iv) Gas hydrates group, Technical University of Denmark v) Bioprocess Group, University of Vigo, Spain, v) BC Materials, Spain and vi) SABIC polymer research centre, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia where from 2021 he also works as a consultant in fuel cells related project involving protic ILs. These collaborations are quite fruitful so far resulting in several high-quality publications. He is working as a referee for more than 30 international journals (Elsevier, ACS, RSC, Wiley, MDPI, NPG) and is on the list of the Editorial Board of three open-access journals (PLOS, Thermo, Physchem). He also co-edited special issues in Int. J. Mol. Sci. and Front. Bioeng. Biotech. He was also invited by the Slovakian Science and Technology Agency for the grant reviewing process.
