Alexandre Paiva has completed his PhD with a Marie-Curie research grant in Hamburg, Germany, in Bioengineering and Thermodynamics in 2008. In the same year, he earned a Marie Curie Reintegration Grant and a FCT funded post-doc grant, which allowed his return to Portugal to the now called Biocatalysis & Bioenergy lab at REQUIMTE, where he has always been given the responsibility for the day to day management. Since then he has been involved in 9 FCT funded projects, being the Principal Investigator of 3. Alexandre Paiva has also been active in the pursuit of collaboration with industry. He has been involved in 3 QREN/P2020 funded projects, is/was the PI of 3 privately financed projects by national and international companies and he is part of a COST action and an European project (RISE). Alexandre Paiva has attracted/help attract more than 1.1 Million EUR in projects. As PI he has gathered 563 kEUR in research projects. Alexandre Paiva started pursuing his line of research in the last years independently combining is expertise in sustainable process for extraction and valorization of feedstocks with a the new line of research Deep Eutectic Solvents. Because of his independence, Alexandre Paiva is the corresponding/last author of 16 papers (11 in the last 5 years), the main supervisor of 5 PhD students (2 finished), the co-supervisor of 4 PhD students (1 finished) and the supervisor of about 30 Master thesis. Being the PI of several research projects and the (co)supervisor of PhD and Master students has given Alexandre Paiva experience in all aspects of managing/leading a lab and a research team. Alexandre Paiva is the first author of one of the first papers published by a Portuguese research group on deep eutectic solvents. This paper is in the top ten of the most downloaded papers with and has 529 citations (Jan 2020 – Scopus). Although he is responsible for other researchers in collaboration with the other members of the research group, he is the leader of a team composed by 2 Researcher with PhD, 3 PhD students and 2 Scholar researches (Master degree). Alexandre Paiva is also the CEO of DES Solutio, Lda., a spin-off from NOVA, with the objective of facilitating the implementation of his research into industry. This already led to the interest of international companies. As a recognition of his research, Alexandre Paiva was invited to be part of the Jury in 5 PhD Vivas, 2 in Portugal and 3 international and of 2 review papers and 10 MSc. thesis. He has also already 5 patent applications in his field of research and is the scientific advisor of EXMCeuticals. He has an h-index of 19 with 1438 citations (Scopus). Believing that collaborations are extremely valuable, as they increase the number of research tools, Alexandre Paiva has helped strengthen existing networks, and has established new ones. Presently, Alexandre Paiva collaborates with several staff members of the Chemistry/LAQV-REQUIMTE, Life Sciences, Materials Science and the Applied Social Sciences Departments. He also collaborates with the University of Lisbon, University of Minho and IBET. He also established important international collaborations with the Universities of Hamburg-Harburg, Birmingham, Burgos and Valladolid. In order to disseminate his research, to the general public he has 1 article published in Impact Publication as well as 1 profile article and 3 scientific articles published in SciTech Europa.
