José A. Lopes da Silva nasceu em Setembro de 1963, em Lisboa, Portugal. Atualmente é investigador e professor auxiliar no Departamento de Química da Universidade de Aveiro. Possui uma licenciatura em Ciências Farmacêuticas (Universidade do Porto, 1987) e doutoramento em Biotecnologia - Ciência e Engenharia dos Alimentos (Universidade Católica Portuguesa, 1995 / supervisores Andy Rao (Universidade de Cornell) e Pilar Gonçalves (FEUP, Universidade do Porto)). Lecciona unidades curriculares na área da Biotecnologia Alimentar, Bioquímica da Nutrição e Química-Física. É membro sénior do grupo de investigação em Qualidade e Tecnologia de Alimentos, LAQV-REQUIMTE. É autor ou co-autor de 12 capítulos de livros e de 96 artigos científicos em revistas internacionais ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) (h-index 37). Orientou 4 teses de doutoramento e coorientou 6. Orientou ou coorientou 25 dissertações de mestrado. É/foi investigador principal de 5 projectos de investigação financiados pela FCT / Portugal nas áreas de Ciência dos Alimentos e Ciências dos Materiais. Os principais interesses de investigação englobam: propriedades funcionais de polissacarídeos e proteínas; reologia e textura de produtos agro-alimentares; filmes e revestimentos de biopolímeros; nanofibras de (bio)polímeros por eletrofiação com potencial aplicação em áreas biomédicas e alimentares; propriedades interfaciais de colóides e líquidos iónicos. J.A. Lopes da Silva é um dos Editores Associados do Journal of Food Science (IFT, EUA), para a secção de " Food Engineering, Materials Science, and Nanotechnology". Foi vice-director do Mestrado em Biotecnologia (Universidade de Aveiro, 2013-2016) e secretário-geral da Sociedade Portuguesa de Reologia (2006-2010).
