Summary January 2025: Throughout my scientific career, my research activity has focused on 3 main lines 1) development of new methodologies for screening and monitoring of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in environmental samples using chromatographic techniques coupled to mass spectrometry, 2) development of analytical methodology to determine nutrients and metabolites in biological fluids and food composition, and 3) application of wastewater analysis for epidemiological purposes (WBE) for the determination of consumption or exposure to drugs or pollutants. My doctoral thesis, carried out at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) thanks to an FPU contract (Extraordinary Award Faculty of Chemistry, 2010), addressed the application of microextraction techniques for the analysis of several families of contaminants, persistent and/or emerging, in environmental and food samples. Moreover, during my 3-year Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral contract at the University of Barcelona (2012-2015) I worked on several projects studying the relationship between food intake and health disorders, especially during pregnancy and early life stages. Currently, I'm assistant professor at USC and I work on several projects related to the study of environmental pollution and WBE. My research activity has resulted in the publication of 4 book chapters and 69 scientific articles in prestigious journals (60 in Q1, 34 in D1, 19 as first author and 12 as corresponding author) reaching an H-index of 29 in Scopus. I also transferred my results to the scientific community presenting 43 contributions in international congresses (12 as oral communications) and participating in different webinars related to the activities of the 12 research projects in which I have participated, 2 of them at international level, in which important collaborations were established. In particular, the JPI PROMOTE project (where I coordinated the analytical tools work package), focused on the search for new polar pollutants in surface and groundwater, has been one of the seeds for the inclusion of the new PMT (persistent, mobile and toxic) criteria for the classification of substances at European level in the REACH regulation. Currently I am principal investigator in two national projects, the first one is the NEPMTUNE project (coordinated project of 2 years, funded with more than 500K€ between three participating entities of the TED2021 call of the Spanish Research Agency), where I also perform coordination tasks. The second is the SYDRES project, funded with more than 100K€ in the 2022 call of the National Drugs Plan (Ministry of Health, Spain), which evaluates the patterns of intravenous substance consumption through the analysis of syringe residues. In addition, I have participated in 10 contracts with companies and public entities (2 of them as principal investigator) to transfer know-how on analysis of emerging contaminants for more than 200K€. I have participated in 4 nationally funded research networks (CIBER-Obn, ESARNet, NET4Sea, RIAPAd) and 1 international network (SCORE). Of these, I currently belong to the national RIAPAd network (funded by ISCIII), a research network on addictions and to the international SCORE (Sewage Analysis CORe group Europe), which since 2011 uses WBE to monitor substances of abuse in more than a hundred cities worldwide. The results of SCORE campaigns are included in the reports of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), which, in fact, has included WBE as a key tool for monitoring drug use. On the other hand, the results generated in projects related to the presence of PMT-type substances (PROMOTE, NORWATER) have been transferred to regional and national institutions with competences in surface water regulation, such as Augas de Galicia (AdG) or the Portuguese Environmental Agency (APA) and different companies involved in water treatment or analysis (e.g. APPlus or Viaqua).
