Rui Miguel de Castro e Ramos graduated in Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) in 2010, completed a Master's in Chemistry in the same institution in 2012 and a PhD in Sustainable Chemistry in 2017 from the University of Porto and NOVA University of Lisbon. Since April 2019, he has been a researcher at LAQV-REQUIMTE, contracted with a junior research grant within the First Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) (ref. CEECIND/04259/2017). With a background in analytical chemistry and computational chemistry, his research has been focused on the development of greener and simpler sample preparation methodologies for liquid and solid samples and the determination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in foods (e.g. beverages, cheese) and industrial products (wood-based panels, cork-agglomerated panels, cosmetics). Since 2022, Rui has served as the Principal Investigator (PI) of the R&D project “VolWood - Volatile Profile Characterization of Wood-Based Panels Leading to New Production Strategies Using Forest and Agricultural Surpluses,” funded by FCT (PTDC/CTM-PAM/1348/2021). This project has enabled Rui to collaborate with industrial partners in the wood-based panel sector, such as Sonae Arauco and Valbopan - Fibras de Madeira SA. He has published 32 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, 19 of which he authored as the first or corresponding author. He regularly presents his works at different national and international scientific meetings, with more than 80 oral/poster presentations. Additionally, he has been an active reviewer in top international journals in his area. RR has served as Guest Editor for two special issues in peer-reviewed journals: a Q1-ranked journal, Foods, with the issue titled “Coffee and Coffee-Related Product Characterization Through Rapid Analytical Methodologies and Downscaled Systems”, and a Q3-ranked journal, Separations, with the issue titled “Design and Development of Sample Preparation Procedures for the Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds”. He has supervised and co-supervised 11 BSc students, 2 MSc students and is currently supervising 1 MSc and 2 PhD students. He has also tutored 5 national and international students (4 Msc, 1 PhD). Rui established collaborations with different national and international research groups and industrial companies. He is also responsible for the maintenance of a scientific group (www.fc.up.pt/quaqua) website.
