I finished my MSc. in Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto in 2015. During my master thesis, I develop my interest on sustainable energies and worked with solar cells, particularly in “Preparation, characterization and optimization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs)”. Here I was able to understand the main mechanisms of assembling and characterization of PSCs which lead to a final enhancement of PSCs efficiency from 2.9% to 7.0%. Over the last two years I have been working on another energy related project, namely, FCT/COMPETE2020 PrintPV project entitled: “Large-scale printing of novel photovoltaics based on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 chalcopyrite" at INL, under the supervision of Dr. Yury V. Kolen’ko. Here I had the opportunity to integrate a multidisciplinary research group and successfully develop novel nanoparticles synthesis, ink formulations and fabricate Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells using robust screen printing route. I was also able to operate and develop my skills on several characterization techniques, namely: X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, UV-vis-NIR and Infrared Spectroscopies, Thermogravimetric Analysis, and I–V measurements. One of the main achievements of this project was the publication of “Superstructural Ordering in Hexagonal CuInSe2 Nanoparticles” (Chem. Mater. 2019, 31, 1, 260-267), where the development of a new large-scale colloidal synthesis of metastable CuInSe2 nanoparticles with uncommon hexagonal plate-like morphology and chemical ordering of Cu and In were discovered. Notably, during the PrintPV project, I also had the opportunity to bring science and environment awareness to school kids. Specifically, I was leading a small team of researchers that performed around 10 outreach activities related with solar cells (http://www.printpv.org/outreach). Furthermore, the research group that I integrated at INL works in several different areas: nanocrystal science, catalysis, organic chemistry (covalent organic frameworks - COFs), water treatment and nanocoatings, which allowed me to expand my knowledge on these topics as well.
