Research in my group is focused on addressing fundamental questions in the field of molecular ecology and evolutionary genomics. We build and make us of genomic resources to infer evolutionary processes of diversification and disentangling processes that drive the dynamics of adaptation. Our research bridges topics that are fundamental for understanding the ability of freshwater fish populations and other aquatic organisms to persist in, and eventually adapt to, a changing environment, i.e., the genetic bases of ecologically relevant traits, genomic signatures of natural selection, variation in recombination rates, and comparative genome evolution. In other words, we study the evolutionary processes relevant for generating genetic diversity and aim to understand how evolutionary processes constrain or facilitate adaptive evolution and speciation in fishes and other aquatic organisms. Our research demonstrates the value of genomic resources and data for inferring past evolutionary processes and the impact of past process on contemporary diversity. We highlight that temporally resolved genomic data provides valuable information on the continuous and dynamic interacting of ecological and evolutionary processes. Our research further showcases the relevance of integrating evolutionary concepts into conservation and monitoring strategies.
