Luís Emanuel Queirós dos Reis is a PhD student in Biomedical Sciences, at the Abel Salazar Biomedical Sciences Institute - University of Porto. This research was performed in collaboration with Swansea University, Cardiff University and the Oslo University Hospital, and focused on drug discovery against SARS-CoV-2, particularly the spike glycoprotein, developed under grant awarded by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (SFRH/BD/2020/10230). He completed a master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2018, at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto, being awarded a Merit Scholarship for obtaining the highest average grade in the year 2017/2018 at the same institution. Throughout the degree he collaborated with the Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry Laboratory. Upon completion of the degree, he has worked as a Pharmacist and as a Quality Control Laboratory Trainee at Bial. During this period, he started a post graduate degree in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, completed in 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic gave him the opportunity to enrol in a PhD project focused on drug discovery and virology, during which his research was awarded an EEA/Norway, and included three scientific missions where completed, to Swansea University and to Oslo University Hospital, in two separate occasions. During this degree, he acquired technical skills on computer aided drug design, including molecular modelling, molecular dynamics and virtual screening techniques. Additionally, he also performed experimental validation of predicted activity with binding assays and antiviral cell-based infection assays. A final optimization stage yielded a bioactive compound with nanomolar activity against SARS-CoV-2. These studied have been communicated in several oral and poster presentation and published as scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals of high impact.
