I am a conservation scientist interested in the integration of quantitative, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches to face conservation challenges. With particular interest in nature conservation, human-wildlife interactions, and large carnivores and other megafauna in human-dominated landscapes. These species are among the most controversial and challenging group of species to coexist with, in our crowded planet. Keeping a strong emphasis on the applied nature of my research, I aim to inform, and interact with, managers, policy-makers, interested stakeholders, and the general public. I actively seek for a dialogue among disciplines, considering the ecological, psychological, political, legal and socio-economic processes connected to conservation. My current research lines include: i) the study of the phenomenon of coexistence between large carnivores (e.g., wolves and bears), and other megafauna, and human activities (e.g., farming, infrastructure development, ecotourism), as well as the mitigation of negative interactions between these species and humans, and associated social conflicts; ii) wildlife trade (e.g., CITES) and the fight against poaching and illegal wildlife trade; iii) the environmental rule of law (i.e., from implementation to enforcement and compliance of conservation regulations); iv) or boosting new approaches in conservation science for an effective conservation of nature. My collaborative approach has resulted in multiple internationally collaborations, being co-authored by >1,200 researchers from >45 countries. I am involved in translating science into policy and decision-making, both at national and international levels (advisory activities, contracts, IUCN, dialogue law-ecology). I have been involved in advisory activities for different regional and national authorities in the conservation of large carnivores, human-wildlife conflicts, and fighting against poaching. I have participated in >40 R&D projects, and 80 research contracts (>50 as PI/co-PI), with a high degree of internationalization and funded from multiple sources (regional, national, EU, international institutions & foundations). I give a particular attention to communicating research, interacting frequently with the media, different stakeholders and the general public. I have published >210 peer-reviewed publications in my career, including pieces in multidisciplinary and conservation-related journals, such as Science (19), Nature Ecology & Evolution (4), PLOS ONE (14), Scientific Reports (13), Bioscience (6), Biological Conservation (29), Conservation Biology (5), Journal of Applied Ecology (3), Conservation Letters (4). I have contributed with >140 presentations in national/international congress, 30 books and/or book-chapters, >60 talks by invitation, and >140 scientific/technical reports to different stakeholders and decision-makers. I have participated in 25 workshops related to conservation and management issues at national (e.g., large carnivore conservation) and international levels (e.g., CITES). I have been involved in the supervision of 6 post-doctoral researchers, 21 PhD students, 17 MSc students and 19 Licentiate dissertations, in national and international institutions. I have been involved in advisory activities for public (regional and national authorities) and private (companies, NGOs), in the conservation of large carnivores, and nature conservation. Extensive experience analyzing the degree of implementation and compliance with different environmental laws and regulations. My work has been used by several decision-makers, institutions and conservation groups, for example, the Spanish Government in the conservation of large carnivores, CITES, and to fight against wildlife poaching and illegal wildlife trade. I am part of the Spanish Action Plan against illegal trafficking and international poaching of wild species and the CITES Scientific Authority. I´m also part of the Spanish CITES scientific authority.
